What is Friction?

When one surface is moving over another surface, a force comes into play and opposes their relative motion.

Friction is a force that opposes motion between any surfaces that are touching. Friction can work for or against us.

For the different directions of motion, we can say that,
If force is applied to an object in the direction of motion, it speeds up.
If force is applied on an object opposite to the direction of motion, it slows down and eventually stops.

Cause of friction
Friction occurs due to surface irregularities of the two objects in contact.
Adhesive forces between surfaces in contact.
Plowing effect.

Calculating frictional force using a spring balance
Using a spring balance we can find the frictional forces opposed by different materials.
Sandpaper gives a higher reading as compared to stainless steel.
