Headstart: Dr. Rontgene Solante says initial studies show that the Lambda variant is driving the surge in coronavirus cases in three South American countries. He also notes that the variant's mutation in spike protein may lead to heightened transmissibility similar to the Delta variant's. But Solante is still highly positive that the existing vaccines will be effective against the variant.
