Mizrab has thrown open its doors for music lovers in Kashmir. Kashmir’s first music school established over a decade ago is operational now. It’s free for those who cannot afford to pay the fees. Youngsters playing Guitar and Rabab mentored by the formidable team of Irfan Bilal, famous in Kashmir for their contribution in the world of music. They have participated in several musical shows in the country and abroad. But it wasn’t easy for the duo trained outside Kashmir to break local stereotypes. They are using music as a therapy to counter the sense of hopelessness that has gripped Kashmir due to years of conflict and violence. With dreams in their eyes these budding Kashmiri artists are practising hard every day not just to gain prominence in Kashmir but also to compete on national level. It’s youngsters like these who are putting Kashmir back on the entertainment map. Social media has helped them to gain popularity. Some of them have their own YouTube channels. While some Kashmiri youngsters are learning music and singing and want to pursue a career in the field of entertainment, there are others who have turned youtubers, they were out of work due to internet blockade after the abrogation of Article 370 but now they are back in business, making funny videos using local themes. Restrictions and communication blockade could not dampen the enthusiasm of these youngsters for creating some original content and for inspiring many others to follow in their footsteps.
