ST. GREGORY THE GREAT Novena Day 2 / Patron Saint of Musicians and Singers

#StGregoryTheGreatNovena #StGregoryTheGreat #PatronSaintOfMusiciansAndSinger

St. Gregory the Great, you said, “have confidence in the compassion of our Creator.” It is with this confidence that we now ask you to bring our intentions before the throne of our Lord.

(State Your Intention)

Servant of the Servants of God, St. Gregory, you had a deep love of the monastic life. May the Lord grant me your contemplative spirit, that I may seek out silence and desire to grow deeper in love with God.
Amen.

ABOUT ST. GREGORY THE GREAT

Gregorian chant is probably the most familiar aspect of St. Gregory’s legacy today, which makes it only natural that he is a patron saint of musicians and singers. However, St. Gregory utilized his many gifts throughout his papacy. These gifts will be highlighted throughout this novena.

St. Gregory the Great was a son of a wealthy Roman senator in the 6th century. He was also born of a family of saints. His mother (Silvia), his aunt (Pateria), and his great-great-grandfather (Felix III) are all formally recognized saints.

Following in his father’s footsteps, he became a prefect of Rome by his early thirties. When his father died, he transformed his family’s villa into a monastery. He loved the monastic life, but God called him out into the world when he was elected Pope. He was the first pope to refer to himself as the servant of the servants of God, and he exemplified that during his papacy.

He had a commitment to the poor, providing more effective relief for the people than the government by requiring churchmen to help those in need and stepping up food production on the Church’s farmland. He would not eat until the impoverished were fed and he would eat with twelve of them at his table.

He also re-invigorated missionary efforts in northern Europe, reformed the liturgy, established Western plainchant (now called Gregorian chant after him), and was a prolific writer. It is no wonder that he was declared a saint shortly after his death by popular acclaim.
