Argentinian presidential spokesperson Gabriela Cerruti said the country will continue seeking international backing to reach the best agreement with the International Monetary Fund, speaking in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

"We have to resolve the issue of the debt, which is not just any debt, it is the largest debt in the history of Argentina, but it is also the largest loan granted by the International Monetary Fund. It is the debt contracted by [former] president Mauricio Macri without going through Parliament, and it is a debt that compromises the lives of Argentines, their homes, their food, the daily lives of Argentines, for several years and for many generations," she said.

The statement came during Argentine President Alberto Fernandez's visit to Rome, where he is participating in the G20 summit.

"The issues of climate change, of the climate crisis, are going to be dealt with both at [the G20 Leaders' Summit in] Rome and at [COP 26 in] Glasgow, and there Argentina is going to take important positions with regard to increasing the commitment that had been set in Paris in 2016 on the reduction of [greenhouse gas] emissions, it is going to take a proposal that increases it to 27 per cent more than what we had committed to in the Paris agreement of 2016," added the spokesperson.
