Andrew Wallace appeared to have 'difficulty' handling new Speaker role: Clennell

Andrew Wallace's first day as Speaker of the House showed the extent of his inexperience and how "seamlessly" his predecessor Tony Smith did the job, according to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

The remarks come after Queensland Liberal MP Andrew Wallace got elected along party lines as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.

His election to the position comes after Tony Smith was farewelled as Speaker on Monday.

"Smith, you didn't really notice him," Mr Clennell said.

"And you certainly noticed Andrew Wallace just about every minute today – he was letting the government say things that they weren't able to say under Smith.

"He appeared to be having difficulty in terms of ruling on points of order – but it is a tough job and I think it illustrated how tough it is."
