There’s been some misconception about how can collect unemployment after actively BECOMING unemployed. I’ve talked about how those who refused the vaccine (in most states) are ineligible to receive unemployment benefits.
Did you know that, generally speaking, if you quit your job that YOU are no longer eligible for these benefits as well? It varies by state and honestly it’s up to them to interpret those laws. And, of course, there are exceptions.
According to Paul Sonn, state policy program director at the National Employment Law Project: “Generally, if you voluntarily resign your job, you’re not eligible for unemployment. It’s not something people who quit their jobs can count on.”
The Great Resignation took off before I could deliver this important news to the 4.4 million who walked out of their jobs in September alone. The good news is that there are exceptions to this rule and it’s very likely that many of you who quit still qualify.
Those who leave a job due to “unsafe work conditions” or possibly a “constructive discharge,” which is basically when an employer basically forces you to quit, may still get benefits. Your local unemployment division will look at this on a “case-by-case” basis, which admittedly could take a while.
Meanwhile, unemployment is taking a while in one state in particular. California’s unemployment backlog is currently at 77,000. While that’s LOADS better than the staggering ONE MILLION it was at this time last year.
Rita Saenz, the director of EDD, admitted that only 15% of claims raise questions where an interview is even required, with the rest being paid right away. She said: "These interviews are now scheduled 26 weeks out, which is completely unacceptable.”
The good news, the EDD said interviews are starting to ease up and this 6 months may drastically decrease soon. Bottom line, unemployment is coming your way and I’m sorry it’s taking so long with these massive delays, but IT IS COMING.
You know those “Skip Into” timestamps that pop up on Netflix? Someone has to put them there. It’s an 8 hour job you can apparently get done in about 3 hours. Similarly, Karaoke videos need to line up with the words of a song, right? There’s someone for that job, too.
I don’t know why I’ve never thought of this before -- those slot machine sounds and songs you here walking through the casino right here in Vegas… there’s someone composing those songs. Duh, right? It’s apparently a full time job and none of us even think about stuff like that.
Here are some of the other strange jobs I saw on that list: a graphic designer for receipt coupons, someone who weighs gallons of gas for a living, reading letters that machines can’t decipher, and horse hair braiding.
Maybe that’s something to think about: while you’re looking for your next job, maybe broaden your horizons a bit and make your next gig a bit interesting. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Tell me: what’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?
Finally, let’s talk about the supply chain and what was just discovered on the U.K. border. Border Force officers found $44 million worth of… “sugar”... in a 922-pound onion ring shipment. This put everything to an abrupt halt and the man behind this crime was promptly arrested.
The man, 30-year-old Piotr Perzenowski, was charged with “powder” smuggling and appeared at Kent's Folkestone Magistrates' Court yesterday morning.
