Public health experts and officials are alarmed by the Omicron COVID-19 variant’s high number of mutations — with preliminary data showing at first an increased potential for transmissibility, a reduction in vaccine effectiveness and increased reinfection.
The drugmakers behind the COVID-19 vaccines are closely watching this mutation of the virus, as they already know the Delta variant can cause breakthrough cases in fully vaccinated people.
